Dry January rules: what counts, what doesn't, and the grey areas
The official rulebook is one line long. The questions people actually ask, about 0.5% beer, the midnight toast, a splash of wine in the risotto, are longer. Here are honest answers, and how to write your own house rules.

Quick answer. The only official Dry January rule is no alcohol from 1 to 31 January. Alcohol-free drinks are your choice: Alcohol Change UK, which runs the challenge, works with alcohol-free brands, but some people find 0.5% drinks keep the habit going. Labels differ by country: in the UK "alcohol-free" has meant 0.05% or less, while in the US "non-alcoholic" can mean up to 0.5%. If you slip, carry on the next day rather than restarting.
Most challenges come with small print. Dry January's is refreshingly short: don't drink alcohol in January. But real life is full of edge cases, and the questions start on New Year's Eve at about 11.58 pm.
Below are the official rule, the grey areas people search for most, and a simple way to write rules that fit your month.
Please read this first. If you drink heavily or every day, or use other drugs daily, stopping suddenly can be dangerous. Talk to a doctor before you stop. The Quiet Month is not medical, not therapy and not rehab. In a crisis, call your local emergency number or find a free helpline at findahelpline.com. More in our questions.
The one official rule
Alcohol Change UK, the charity that started Dry January in 2013, describes it simply as a month off alcohol: 31 days, 1 to 31 January. There is no fee, no registration you must complete and no referee. You can sign up for the charity's free app and emails if you want support, and the research suggests that helps (see the apps guide). But the challenge belongs to you.
When does it start: midnight, morning or the 2nd?
- Officially it covers the whole of 1 January. In 2027 that is a Friday.
- In practice, most people take the last glass on New Year's Eve as the line and start when they wake. That is fine.
- Starting on the 2nd so you can drink on New Year's Day is allowed, in the sense that nobody is checking. But you'll do 30 days, and the 1st is the easiest landmark to remember. If you start late, consider ending late: 31 days is the point.
- Missed January entirely? Pick any 31 days. February, March and the 1st of any month all work.
Does alcohol-free beer or wine count?
This is the big one, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you want from the month.
The challenge itself does not ban alcohol-free drinks, and Alcohol Change UK has worked with alcohol-free drink brands as campaign partners. For many people a cold 0.0% beer at the barbecue, or an alcohol-free sparkling wine at a birthday, is exactly what makes the month possible.
For others, the ritual is the problem: the same glass, the same hour, the same "just one". If you notice an alcohol-free beer at 6 pm is quietly reserving a seat for the real thing, switch it for something that doesn't taste like the old habit. "Alcohol-free" doesn't always mean zero
Labels vary by country, which surprises people:
| Label | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| UK "alcohol-free" | 0.05% alcohol or less (government guidance; the rules have been under review, so check the label) |
| UK "de-alcoholised" | 0.5% or less |
| UK "low alcohol" | 1.2% or less |
| US "non-alcoholic" (beer) | Less than 0.5%, with that stated on the label |
| US "alcohol free" (beer) | No alcohol at all (0.0%) |
A 0.5% drink contains very little alcohol; some ripe fruit juices and bread contain traces too. But if you want a strictly zero month, or if you're avoiding alcohol for medical reasons, pregnancy or because any taste of it is risky for you, choose 0.0% and read the small print. The other grey areas
- Cooking with wine or beer. Heat drives off much of the alcohol, but how much depends on time and method; a quick flambé leaves more than a long stew. Most people allow cooked dishes. If you want zero, use stock, verjuice or a splash of vinegar instead.
- Kombucha and kefir. Fermented drinks can contain small amounts of alcohol. Shop-bought kombucha is usually sold as a soft drink; home-brewed can be stronger. Your call.
- Desserts such as tiramisu or Christmas pudding left over from December can contain uncooked alcohol. Skip them or accept them, but decide before the pudding arrives.
- Medicines. Some cough syrups and tinctures contain alcohol. Never stop a medicine for Dry January; ask a pharmacist if you want an alternative.
- Mouthwash. Not drinking. Carry on.
- A toast at a wedding or funeral. Raise a glass of something else. Nobody is watching what's in it as closely as you think.

What if you slip?
Here the unofficial rule matters more than the official one: carry on, don't restart. One drink on the 12th doesn't erase eleven dry days, and it doesn't mean the month is over. Research on habit-building found that missing a single day had little effect on the long-term result. The danger is the "what the hell" moment, where one drink becomes a lost weekend.
Our guide to what to do if you drank during Dry January has a next-morning plan. The short version: note what happened, change one thing, and keep going.
Write your own house rules (five lines)
Official rules are a floor. House rules are what actually carry you through the third Friday. Write five lines on a card in December:
- The line: "No alcohol from waking on 1 January to bedtime on 31 January."
- The grey areas: "0.0% drinks yes, 0.5% no; cooked wine yes."
- The 6 pm plan: "Shower, change, ginger and lime soda, walk."
- The social plan: "I'll go to two things a week and leave by ten."
- The slip plan: "If I drink, I tell one person and carry on the next morning."
Then use the 31-day alcohol-free challenge checklist to tick the days off, and see what you kept with the Dry January calculator.

Rules for different kinds of January
- Strict dry: nothing with alcohol, 0.0% only. Good if you want a clean experiment.
- Classic dry: no alcoholic drinks; alcohol-free drinks and cooked dishes allowed. What most people do.
- Damp: fewer drinks, set days, a weekly limit. A real option, explained in Damp January.
Whichever you choose, choose it in advance. Deciding at the bar is how rules quietly become "well, just tonight".
Where The Quiet Month fits
Rules are much easier when the setting does half the work. A month with no bar downstairs, no office drinks and four people all doing the same thing is a different experience from white-knuckling it at home.
The Quiet Month is a calm month away for up to four guests, each in their own private flat a short walk from me: slow mornings, a short, always optional meditation, daily movement, shared low-carb meals and long evening talks, with no alcohol, no smoking and no drugs for anyone, me included. The first month starts on 1 January 2027, then on the 1st of every month. Honestly: I'm self-taught, not a doctor or counsellor, and The Quiet Month is not medical and not therapy. Every guest is 21 or over and brings a doctor's fit-to-join letter. I don't publish where I am; after a free video call, if we both want to go ahead, you learn the country and city before you sign anything, and nothing is paid before that call and a signed agreement. The programme fee is US$10,000 for the month; your flat and flights are extra. See the January 2027 month and what the fee includes.

Questions people ask
What are the rules of Dry January?
One rule: no alcohol for the 31 days of January. Everything else, such as alcohol-free drinks or cooking with wine, is your choice. Decide your grey areas before the month starts.
Does Dry January start at midnight?
Officially it covers the whole of 1 January. Most people stop after the New Year's Eve toast and start when they wake. Either is fine.
Can I drink alcohol-free beer during Dry January?
Yes, if it helps. The challenge doesn't ban it. If an alcohol-free beer keeps the old 6 pm ritual alive, try something that tastes different instead. For a strict zero month, choose 0.0% rather than 0.5%.
Is alcohol-free beer really alcohol-free?
Not always. In the UK "alcohol-free" has meant 0.05% or less; in the US "non-alcoholic" beer can contain up to 0.5%, and only "alcohol free" means none at all. Check the label.
What happens if I drink during Dry January?
Nothing official: there is no referee. Carry on the next day rather than restarting, and change one thing that led to the slip.
