Dry February 2027: what it is, and how to do the shortest dry month well
January gets all the attention. But every year many people choose February instead: the holidays are over, the diary is calmer, and it is the shortest month of the year. Here is what Dry February is, which official challenges exist, how it compares with Dry January, and a simple plan for the 28 days of February 2027.

Quick answer. Dry February means no alcohol for the whole of February: in 2027 that is 28 days, from Monday 1 February to Sunday 28 February. Anyone can do it on their own. Two organised versions raise money for charity: Dry Feb in Canada (an Ezy Raise initiative; money goes to CAMH, a mental health hospital) and FebFast in Australia (for Lifeline). Pick your start date, plan your four weekends, and set up one daily reminder and one person to check in with. If you drink heavily or every day, talk to a doctor before you stop.
Every year, someone tells me in late January that they "missed" Dry January. The holidays ran long, there was a wedding on the 9th, work was chaos, and by the time they were ready, the month was half gone. My answer is always the same: then do February. It's shorter, it's calmer, and nobody will notice you are doing it unless you tell them.
This guide explains what Dry February is, the two best-known organised challenges, how February compares with January, and a week-by-week plan for 2027. I run a small alcohol-free month, so I'm not neutral. But none of this needs me. It needs a start date and a plan.
Please read this first. If you drink heavily or every day, or use other drugs daily, stopping suddenly can be dangerous. Talk to a doctor before you stop. The Quiet Month is not medical, not therapy and not rehab. In a crisis, call your local emergency number or find a free helpline at findahelpline.com. More in our questions.
The short version
- Dry February = no alcohol for all of February. In 2027 that is 28 days, Monday 1 February to Sunday 28 February.
- You can do it alone, or join an organised challenge that raises money for charity.
- Dry Feb (Canada) raises funds for CAMH; FebFast (Australia) raises funds for Lifeline. Both let you buy a one-night "pass" for a special occasion.
- February is the shortest month, and it often has fewer big social events than December and January.
- Plan four weekends, not 28 days, and set up support before 1 February.
- If you drink heavily or every day, see a doctor first. Stopping suddenly can be dangerous.
What is Dry February?
Dry February is simple: you drink no alcohol from 1 to 28 February (29 in a leap year). It is the same idea as Dry January, one month off, chosen on purpose, moved to the next month. Some people do it because January didn't work out; some because their January is full of travel or celebrations; some because they did Dry January and want to keep going; and some simply prefer a shorter month.
The name is used in two ways. Most people say "Dry February" to mean any alcohol-free February they do on their own. A few countries also have an official, branded challenge in February, where you sign up, ask friends to sponsor you, and the money goes to a charity.
The official February challenges
These are the two best-known. Details change from year to year, so check the official site before you sign up. (Both checked on 29 October 2026.)
- Dry Feb (Canada). The official site describes it as a challenge to give up alcohol for the 28 days of February and raise funds for CAMH, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, which it calls Canada's largest mental health teaching hospital. It says the challenge is an initiative of Ezy Raise, that donations are in Canadian dollars, and that it runs in English only. Participants can buy a Golden Ticket, one night off for a special occasion, for a minimum donation of CA$25. If you have seen Dry Feb linked to a different charity in older articles, go by the official site. When we checked, it was taking interest sign-ups for Dry Feb 2027.
- FebFast (Australia). FebFast calls itself Lifeline's 28-day booze-free challenge: you sign up for free, go alcohol-free for February, and raise funds for Lifeline's 24/7 crisis support. It offers a One-OFF Pass for a birthday, wedding or other special occasion, and a free calendar tracker.
Both are good if you like a team, a fundraising page and a reason that is bigger than you. You don't need either to do Dry February. And a note from the Dry Feb site that applies to every dry month: it is meant for people who drink socially, and it advises anyone who has five or more drinks a day, or who is dependent on alcohol, to speak with a healthcare provider before signing up.
"Dry Feb" is a registered trademark of its owner. The Quiet Month is not linked to Dry Feb, FebFast, CAMH or Lifeline.

Dry January or Dry February?
Both work. The best month is the one you can actually start. Here is how they compare:
| Dry January | Dry February | |
|---|---|---|
| Length (2027) | 31 days, Fri 1 to Sun 31 January | 28 days, Mon 1 to Sun 28 February |
| Weekends | 5 | 4 |
| Starts | Right after New Year's Eve | On a Monday, after the holiday season |
| Company | Lots of people do it at the same time | Fewer people, so you may need to explain more |
| Big dates inside | Often fewer parties after the first week | Valentine's Day (Sun 14 Feb 2027) and some birthdays |
| Organised challenge | Dry January (Alcohol Change UK) | Dry Feb (Canada), FebFast (Australia) |
Our view: if your January is already full of travel, celebrations or end-of-holiday plans, February is not a second-best choice. It is a better-timed one. And if you did Dry January and liked it, February is the easiest month to keep going; my guide to what to do after Dry January explains how to choose.
One date worth knowing for 2027: Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, depending on the moon sighting. If you observe it, or share meals with people who do, February may already be a month of changed routines. I wrote about a quiet month before Ramadan 2027.
Is a dry February worth it?
Most of the research on one-month breaks comes from Dry January, not February, so read it as a guide. In University of Sussex research led by Dr Richard de Visser, people who took part in Dry January reported benefits such as better sleep, more energy, saving money and feeling more in control of their drinking; these were self-reported surveys of people who chose to take part. The same team found that people who used support (an app, daily emails) were about twice as likely to finish the month without a drink. There is no reason to think 28 days in February works differently from 31 days in January, but nobody has measured February on its own, so I won't pretend they have. (Checked 29 Oct 2026; sources at the end.)

A 28-day plan for February 2027
February 2027 is neat: it starts on a Monday and ends on a Sunday, so it is exactly four weeks. Give each week one job.
- Before 1 February: set up. Choose one daily reminder (an app, a daily email or a tick sheet on the fridge) and one person to check in with. Move bottles out of sight, put two drinks you actually like in the fridge, and look at your calendar for the hardest evening of the month.
- Week 1 (1 to 7 Feb): the habit week. Decide what you'll do at the time you'd usually pour a drink: a walk, a shower, cooking, a call. The first weekend is the first test; plan Saturday evening in advance.
- Week 2 (8 to 14 Feb): the Valentine's week. Valentine's Day 2027 falls on a Sunday. If you're celebrating, book a dinner and decide your drink before you arrive; sparkling tea or an alcohol-free fizz works well. Ideas in what to drink instead of alcohol.
- Week 3 (15 to 21 Feb): the dip. In any dry month, the third week is often when the novelty wears off. Add something new: a class, an early morning, a new walk. Re-read why you started.
- Week 4 (22 to 28 Feb): the finish. Note what changed, add up what you saved, and decide what March looks like before the month ends, not on 1 March.
Want the days on paper? Our free Dry January 2027 planner works for February too: use days 1 to 28 and skip the last three.
How to tell people (once)
Fewer people expect a dry February, so you may be asked more questions. A short, cheerful answer is enough:
- "I'm doing a dry February. January was too busy."
- "I'm off it for February. Ask me in March."
- "I'm raising money for a charity challenge." (If you signed up, this one ends every conversation kindly.)
More lines, for work, family and friends: how to tell people you're not drinking. And if your partner still drinks: a dry month when your partner drinks.

If you slip
One drink on the 12th doesn't cancel the month. Notice what led to it, tell your check-in person, and carry on the next morning. The same next-morning plan works in any month: what to do if you drank during a dry month. If you find you keep slipping, or can't stop once you start, that is worth knowing and worth talking about with a doctor. Free helplines in many countries are listed at findahelpline.com.
Or make February a quiet month away
Some people know that a dry month at home, with the same sofa and the same Friday, will be hard. That is what I do. The Quiet Month starts on 1 January 2027, and then on the 1st of every month, so 1 February works too. Up to four guests. Each guest lives in their own private flat a short walk from me. We share simple low-carb meals, move every day at a pace that suits you, sit for a short, always optional meditation, explore, and talk over coffee in the evenings. The rule is no alcohol, no smoking, no drugs for the whole month, for everyone, me included.
Honestly: I'm self-taught, not a doctor or counsellor. The Quiet Month is not medical, not therapy and not rehab. Every guest is 21 or over and brings a doctor's fit-to-join letter and travel insurance. I don't publish where I am; after a free video call, if we both want to go ahead, you learn the country and city before you sign anything, and nothing is paid before that call and a signed agreement. The programme fee is US$10,000 for the month; your flat and flights are extra. See the dates and the price page.
Email me first at info@thequietmonth.com, start step 1 of the application (about five minutes, free, no commitment), or book a free 20-minute call.

Questions people ask
What is Dry February?
Dry February means drinking no alcohol for the whole of February. In 2027 that is 28 days, from Monday 1 February to Sunday 28 February. You can do it on your own, or join an organised fundraising challenge such as Dry Feb in Canada or FebFast in Australia.
Who runs Dry Feb in Canada?
When we checked on 29 October 2026, the official Dry Feb site said the challenge is an initiative of Ezy Raise and that the money raised goes to CAMH, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. Check the official site before you sign up, as details can change.
Is Dry January or Dry February better?
Neither is better for everyone. February is shorter (28 days in 2027, with four weekends) and starts after the holiday season; January has more people doing it at the same time and more free support. Choose the month you can actually start and finish.
Can I have a night off during Dry February?
On your own challenge, that is your rule to set, but decide it in advance. The organised challenges sell a one-night pass for special occasions: a Golden Ticket on Dry Feb (minimum CA$25 donation) and a One-OFF Pass on FebFast.
Is Dry February safe for everyone?
No. If you drink heavily or every day, or feel shaky or unwell when you go without, stopping suddenly can be dangerous. Talk to a doctor before you stop. The Quiet Month is not medical, not therapy and not rehab.
