How much do you spend on alcohol?

Most of us guess low. Put in a normal week, at home and out, and see what it adds up to over a month, a year, and one month off.

Quick answer. Multiply the drinks you have in a week by the price of one drink, then by 52 for a year. Example: 10 drinks a week at US$8 is US$80 a week, about US$347 a month and US$4,160 a year. A 31-day month without alcohol at that rate keeps about US$354 in your pocket.

The costs people forget

  • Rounds. Buying for a group of four means paying for four drinks, not one.
  • The ride home. Taxis on nights you would otherwise drive or walk.
  • Late food and the morning after. The kebab at midnight, the delivery breakfast, the extra coffees.
  • Mixers and snacks bought only because there is a bottle open.

Add these to the price per drink in the calculator. You will get a truer number.

What to do with the money from a month off

  • Move it on day one. Put the month's figure into a separate pot when the month starts, so you see it grow instead of spending it by accident.
  • Give it a job. A weekend away, a good pair of walking shoes, a course you keep putting off, or a debt paid down.
  • Plan the month, not just the money. Our free Dry January 2027 planner gives you one small prompt a day, and how to plan a month off alcohol covers the weekends and the awkward moments.

Questions people ask

How do I work out how much I spend on alcohol?

Count the drinks you have in a normal week, at home and out, and multiply each by what one costs you. That is your weekly spend. Multiply by 52 for a year, or divide by 7 and multiply by 31 for one month. Add taxis, late-night food and rounds you buy for others as part of the price per drink.

How much money will I save in Dry January?

January has 31 days, so a dry January saves your weekly alcohol spend divided by 7 and multiplied by 31. At 10 drinks a week and US$8 a drink, that is about US$354.

Does the calculator save or send my numbers?

No. It runs in your browser only. Nothing you type is sent to us or stored.

Is this health or medical advice?

No. It only does the money sums. If you drink heavily or every day, talk to a doctor before you stop, because stopping suddenly can be dangerous.
