The best non-alcoholic beer: how to find the one you'll actually enjoy

"Best" lists change every month, and half of them are paid for. This guide does something more useful: it explains which beer styles survive without alcohol, how the labels work, and how to run a tiny tasting at home so you find your own best one in a weekend.

Quick answer. The best non-alcoholic beer is the one that suits your taste and your rules. Styles with strong hops or roast flavour (pale ales, IPAs, stouts) and crisp lagers usually work best without alcohol; wheat beers are fuller but often sweeter. Choose 0.0% if you need true zero; 0.5% beers can taste fuller. Check calories per 100ml, serve very cold in a proper glass, and taste three side by side before you buy a case.

A few years ago, the honest answer to "what's the best non-alcoholic beer?" was "the one that's coldest." Not any more. Big brewers and small craft breweries now make alcohol-free lagers, pale ales, stouts and wheat beers that many drinkers can't easily tell from the real thing. The trouble is that there are so many. Here is how to choose without trusting anyone's affiliate link, including mine (there are none on this page).

Please read this first. If you drink heavily or every day, or use other drugs daily, stopping suddenly can be dangerous. Talk to a doctor before you stop. The Quiet Month is not medical, not therapy and not rehab. In a crisis, call your local emergency number or find a free helpline at findahelpline.com. More in our questions.

First, decide your rule: 0.0% or 0.5%?

In the UK, "alcohol-free" means 0.05% or less. In the US, "non-alcoholic" beer can contain up to 0.5%, and only "alcohol free" means none. Many of the fullest-tasting beers sit at 0.5%. For most adults that is a tiny amount, but if you are pregnant, avoiding alcohol for medical reasons or doing a strict month, choose 0.0%. Our Dry January rules guide explains the grey areas.

How alcohol-free beer is made (and why it matters for taste)

  • Removing the alcohol after brewing a normal beer, usually by gentle vacuum distillation or membrane filtering. Keeps a "real beer" body but can strip some aroma, which brewers often add back with hops.
  • Limited fermentation: the beer is fermented only briefly, or with special yeasts that make little alcohol. Can taste sweeter or more "worty", like bread.
  • Blends and dry-hopping to add aroma and bitterness, which hides the thinness that alcohol usually covers.

You don't need to know the method to enjoy a beer, but it explains why some taste sweet and some thin: alcohol carries body and aroma, and every brewer is solving that gap differently.

A three-bottle tasting at home

  1. Buy three different styles, all 0.0% or all 0.5%: say a lager, a pale ale and a stout. Supermarkets now carry these from the big brewers (Heineken, Guinness, Erdinger and others make well-known alcohol-free versions) as well as specialist alcohol-free breweries.
  2. Chill them well. Alcohol-free beer tastes sweeter and flatter when warm.
  3. Pour into a proper glass, with a head. It changes everything.
  4. Taste side by side, with a plain cracker between. Note: sweet? thin? bitter enough? would I order it again?
  5. Keep the winner in the fridge and try one new beer a week.

Calories, sugar and labels

Alcohol-free beer usually has fewer calories than regular beer, because alcohol itself is about 7 calories per gram. But "alcohol-free" is not automatically "low calorie". In the UK, drinks of 1.2% or less must carry nutrition information, so compare per 100ml. Crisp lagers and hoppy pale ales are often lowest; wheat and fruit beers can be sweeter. People managing diabetes should read the carbohydrate line and ask their doctor or nurse. More in is alcohol-free beer healthy?

Where to drink it

  • At the pub: many now have at least one alcohol-free beer on draught. Ask; it is often not on the menu.
  • At home: keep a few in the fridge so the choice is easy at 6 pm.
  • At parties: bring your own; most hosts are glad of it.

When a beer that tastes like beer isn't a good idea

For some people, a beer that looks, smells and tastes like the real one keeps the old habit warm. If you notice it nudging you toward the real thing, switch to something that tastes nothing like beer: ginger and lime, hot tea, a bitter tonic. That is not failure; it is good self-knowledge. Our 30 alcohol-free drink ideas help.

Where The Quiet Month fits

In The Quiet Month the evenings are alcohol-free for everyone, and the drinks are simple: cold sparkling water with citrus, ginger, good teas. Many guests find they stop missing the beer within a week.

The Quiet Month is a calm month away for up to four guests, each in their own private flat a short walk from me: slow mornings, a short, always optional meditation, daily movement, shared low-carb meals and long evening talks, with no alcohol, no smoking and no drugs for anyone, me included. The first month starts on 1 January 2027, then on the 1st of every month. Honestly: I'm self-taught, not a doctor or counsellor, and The Quiet Month is not medical and not therapy. Every guest is 21 or over and brings a doctor's fit-to-join letter. I don't publish where I am; after a free video call, if we both want to go ahead, you learn the country and city before you sign anything, and nothing is paid before that call and a signed agreement. The programme fee is US$10,000 for the month; your flat and flights are extra. See the January 2027 month and what the fee includes.

Questions people ask

What is the best non-alcoholic beer?

The one that suits your taste and rules. Hoppy pale ales, IPAs and stouts often taste closest to regular beer; crisp lagers are the most widely sold. Taste three styles side by side, well chilled, to find yours.

Which non-alcoholic beer tastes most like real beer?

Usually hoppy pale ales and IPAs, and stouts, because strong hop and roast flavours cover the body that alcohol normally gives. Many 0.5% beers taste fuller than 0.0%.

Is 0.5% beer alcohol-free?

In the US it can be sold as "non-alcoholic". In the UK, "alcohol-free" means 0.05% or less. A 500ml can at 0.5% is about a quarter of a UK unit. Choose 0.0% for true zero.

Is non-alcoholic beer good for diabetics?

Some are low in sugar and some are not. Read the carbohydrate per 100ml on the label and ask your doctor or nurse.

Are there affiliate links on this page?

No. We are not paid by any brewer or shop, and we don't rank brands.
