Alcohol-free Christmas drinks: 14 festive recipes worth a toast
Christmas is the hardest month to drink less and the easiest to make delicious drinks: spice, citrus, cranberries, things that steam. Here are fourteen alcohol-free Christmas drinks, from a hot punch for a crowd to a sharp little cocktail for the person who is driving.

Quick answer. Good alcohol-free Christmas drinks use festive flavours rather than sugar: a hot punch of apple, orange, cinnamon, cloves and star anise; cranberry, lime and soda; ginger ale with pomegranate and rosemary; a spiced pear fizz. For a crowd, make one hot pitcher and one cold one and put them first on the table. Keep a 0.0% sparkling wine for the toast if you want one.
At most Christmas parties the alcohol-free option is a jug of orange juice behind the wine, warming up. You can do much better with very little effort. A great non-alcoholic drink makes the people who aren't drinking feel invited, not tolerated, and the people who are often end up drinking it too.
All measures are for one glass unless I say otherwise. A "shot" is 30ml. Taste as you go.
Hot drinks for cold evenings
- Hot spiced punch (serves 8). In a big pan: 1 litre of cloudy apple juice, 500ml of water or rooibos tea, the juice and peel of 2 oranges, 2 cinnamon sticks, 6 cloves, 2 star anise, a thumb of sliced ginger. Warm gently for 20 minutes; never boil. Ladle into mugs with an orange slice. Using half tea keeps the sugar down.
- Mulled cranberry and pomegranate. 150ml unsweetened cranberry juice, 50ml pomegranate juice, 100ml water, a cinnamon stick, a strip of orange peel, warmed together. Sharp and deep red.
- Hot ginger, lemon and honey. Five slices of fresh ginger and a slice of lemon steeped in hot water for five minutes, a little honey. The best drink for the moment you used to pour a nightcap.
- Spiced chai "eggnog". Warm 250ml milk (or oat milk) with a chai tea bag, a pinch of nutmeg and a teaspoon of maple syrup. Froth with a whisk.

Cold and sparkling
- Cranberry, lime and soda. 60ml unsweetened cranberry juice, the juice of half a lime, ice, top with soda water, a few fresh cranberries. Festive and barely sweet.
- Pomegranate and rosemary ginger ale. 30ml pomegranate juice, a rosemary sprig, ice, top with a dry ginger ale. The rosemary makes it smell like Christmas.
- Spiced pear fizz. 60ml pear juice, a pinch of ground cinnamon, juice of a quarter lemon, top with sparkling water. Serve in a flute.
- Clementine and thyme spritz. Juice of 2 clementines, a sprig of thyme, ice, sparkling water, a twist of peel.
Grown-up alcohol-free Christmas cocktails
- The cranberry "negroni". 60ml cold hibiscus tea, 30ml cranberry juice, a dash of 0.0% bitters or a strip of grapefruit peel, one big ice cube, short glass. Bitter, red, very grown-up.
- Gingerbread espresso. A shot of cold espresso, 60ml milk, a pinch of ginger and cinnamon, a little maple syrup, shaken hard with ice. Decaf after 4 pm.
- Smoked orange "old fashioned". 80ml cold lapsang souchong tea, a teaspoon of maple syrup, a strip of orange peel, one big ice cube.
- Winter sour. 60ml apple juice, 20ml lemon juice, a few drops of vanilla, shaken with ice (add a spoonful of aquafaba for a foam), strained into a coupe, grated nutmeg on top.

For a crowd
- Big cranberry and orange punch (serves 12). 1 litre of unsweetened cranberry juice, juice of 6 oranges and 3 limes, a sliced orange, a handful of frozen cranberries; add 1.5 litres of soda water and ice just before guests arrive.
- The Christmas morning pitcher (serves 6). Equal parts fresh orange juice and sparkling water with a few raspberries. Brunch without a bottle of bubbly on the table.
Hosting tips: put the alcohol-free pitcher first on the table, in proper glasses, with its own label. Nobody should have to ask for it. More in how to enjoy a Christmas party without drinking.
Shop-bought options
Supermarkets now sell alcohol-free sparkling wine, spirits and beers in December. They can be lovely for the toast. Two things to know: labels differ by country, so a strict month means choosing 0.0% (see the label table), and "alcohol-free" is not automatically low in sugar or calories, so check the label. Our guides to non-alcoholic wine and non-alcoholic beer go further.
Keep the sugar sensible
Juice-heavy punches can be as sweet as a soft drink. Cut juice with tea or sparkling water, lean on spice, citrus and bitterness, and serve smaller glasses with lots of ice.
The day itself
Drinks are only part of it. For the whole day, from the morning toast to the long afternoon, read sober Christmas and, if you are on your own this year, Christmas alone. If you're shopping for someone who doesn't drink, see gifts for non-drinkers. And for New Year's Eve, a sober New Year's Eve, then Dry January.
Where The Quiet Month fits
If December is a lot, you are not alone. The Quiet Month starts on 1 January 2027: a calm month away with no alcohol anywhere, for the people who would like the new year to begin gently.
The Quiet Month is a calm month away for up to four guests, each in their own private flat a short walk from me: slow mornings, a short, always optional meditation, daily movement, shared low-carb meals and long evening talks, with no alcohol, no smoking and no drugs for anyone, me included. The first month starts on 1 January 2027, then on the 1st of every month. Honestly: I'm self-taught, not a doctor or counsellor, and The Quiet Month is not medical and not therapy. Every guest is 21 or over and brings a doctor's fit-to-join letter. I don't publish where I am; after a free video call, if we both want to go ahead, you learn the country and city before you sign anything, and nothing is paid before that call and a signed agreement. The programme fee is US$10,000 for the month; your flat and flights are extra. See the January 2027 month and what the fee includes.
Email me first at info@thequietmonth.com, start step 1 of the application (about five minutes, free, no commitment), or book a free 20-minute call.
