Quick answer. For the midnight toast, pour something sparkling into a flute: chilled sparkling water or soda with a splash of white grape or apple juice and a twist of lemon, or a shop-bought alcohol-free sparkling wine. For a party, make one big jug: cranberry, orange, lime, soda and ice. Keep sugar sensible by using more fizz and less juice. Alcohol-free isn't automatically low-calorie, so check labels.
New Year's Eve is the night of the glass. Everyone holds one at midnight, which is exactly why a good alcohol-free one matters. A beautiful drink in the right glass means nobody asks, and you get to enjoy the countdown instead of managing it.
Please read this first. If you drink heavily or every day, or use other drugs daily, stopping suddenly can be dangerous. Talk to a doctor before you stop. The formula
Almost every good mocktail is sour + sweet + something with an edge (bitter, spicy or herbal) + fizz + plenty of ice. Keep the sweet part small and the fizz large, and the drink tastes grown-up rather than like squash. Measures below are for one glass unless it says otherwise; 1 shot = 25 to 30 ml.
Sparkling toasts for midnight
1. The midnight flute
In a chilled flute: 30 ml white grape juice, a squeeze of lemon, topped with very cold sparkling water. Twist of lemon peel. Looks like fizz, tastes clean.
2. Apple and elderflower spritz
30 ml cloudy apple juice, 10 ml elderflower cordial, top with soda, a slice of apple. Light and floral.
3. Pomegranate sparkle
30 ml pomegranate juice, squeeze of lime, top with sparkling water, a few pomegranate seeds dropped in. They rise and fall with the bubbles.
4. Shop-bought alcohol-free sparkling wine
The easiest option. Check the label: in the UK, "alcohol-free" means 0.05% or less and "de-alcoholised" up to 0.5%. If you're avoiding alcohol completely, choose 0.0%. Our guide to alcohol-free wine explains the labels.

Grown-up drinks for the evening
5. Ginger and lime mule
Half a lime cut in wedges and squeezed, 4 slices of fresh ginger muddled, ice, top with ginger beer. Copper mug if you have one.
6. Rosemary grapefruit tonic
60 ml pink grapefruit juice, a rosemary sprig (slap it between your hands to wake it up), ice, top with tonic. Bitter, aromatic, low sugar.
7. Cranberry and orange "sour"
45 ml cranberry juice, 20 ml fresh orange, 10 ml lemon, shaken hard with ice, strained into a coupe. A little aquafaba (chickpea water) shaken in gives a foam top.
8. Cold-brew tonic
60 ml cold-brew coffee over ice, top with tonic, orange peel. Very adult. Skip it late at night if caffeine keeps you up.

For a crowd: two jugs
9. New Year punch (serves about 12)
500 ml cranberry juice, 500 ml orange juice, juice of 3 limes, 1 litre soda water (add last), a sliced orange, a handful of frozen cranberries for ice. Make the juice part ahead; add the fizz when guests arrive.
10. Sparkling iced tea jug (serves about 8)
1 litre strong black or rooibos tea, cooled, 200 ml apple juice, juice of 2 lemons, a little honey to taste, 500 ml soda added at the end, lemon slices, mint. Less sweet than most punches.

For children (and anyone who loves fizz)
11. Midnight sparkler
Lemonade with a splash of cranberry, a slice of orange and a striped straw. Serve in plastic flutes so they can toast too.
12. Glitter-free "galaxy"
Butterfly pea flower tea (it's blue), cooled, poured over ice, then a squeeze of lemon: it turns purple in the glass. A good trick for the countdown.
Keep sugar and calories sensible
- Use more fizz and less juice; a 1:3 ratio still tastes of fruit.
- Citrus, herbs, ginger and tonic add flavour without much sugar.
- Drinkaware notes alcohol-free drinks are not automatically low-calorie: check labels.
- For comparison, NHS figures put a 175 ml glass of 12% wine at up to 158 calories.
How to host the toast
- Chill everything. Cold is what makes sparkling drinks feel special.
- Use proper glasses. Flutes and coupes for everyone, whatever's inside.
- Pour at 11.55. No one notices what's in whose glass.
- Have a second drink ready for after midnight, so nobody hands you one.

Where The Quiet Month fits
Our month starts the morning after this toast. Every guest begins 2027 with a clear head, slow mornings and good food, with no alcohol anywhere.
The Quiet Month is a calm month away for up to four guests, each in their own private flat a short walk from me: slow mornings, a short, always optional meditation, daily movement, shared low-carb meals and long evening talks, with no alcohol, no smoking and no drugs for anyone, me included. The first month starts on 1 January 2027, then on the 1st of every month. Honestly: I'm self-taught, not a doctor or counsellor, and The Quiet Month is not medical and not therapy. Every guest is 21 or over and brings a doctor's fit-to-join letter. I don't publish where I am; after a free video call, if we both want to go ahead, you learn the country and city before you sign anything, and nothing is paid before that call and a signed agreement. The programme fee is US$10,000 for the month; your flat and flights are extra. See the January 2027 month and what the fee includes.
