Seven short, honest notes for your first seven days: sleep, the 6 pm hour, saying "no thanks", cravings, food, the first weekend, and what week 2 often brings.
Please read this first: if you drink heavily or every day, talk to a doctor before you stop. Stopping suddenly can cause dangerous withdrawal for some people. One safety note first, then what to expect from your first nights.
Welcome to your first week without alcohol. Seven short emails, one a day, two minutes each. No streaks, no scoreboard.
Please read this first. If you drink heavily or every day, talk to a doctor before you stop. Stopping suddenly can bring dangerous withdrawal for some people (shaking, sweating, confusion, fits). Now, sleep. Many people expect to sleep like a baby on night one, and then don't. Alcohol can help you drop off faster, but it tends to break up the second half of the night. Without it, the first few nights can feel lighter or restless while your body finds its own rhythm again. For most people this settles within a week or two.
Today's small thing: pick a "lights out" time and set an alarm 30 minutes before it, to start winding down. Phone on charge outside the bedroom if you can.

Day 2: the 6 pm question
The hardest hour is usually not about the drink. Here's what to put there instead.
Day 2. If yesterday's evening felt long, you're in good company.
For a lot of people, the drink was never only a drink. It was the full stop at the end of the working day. The sound of the cap. The first ten minutes on the sofa. Take the drink away and the hour is still there, a bit empty.
So today we don't fight the hour. We fill it.
Today's small thing: plan the next 60 minutes after you get home, in three parts. 1. Arrive: shoes off, change clothes, a big glass of something cold you actually like. 2. Do one thing with your hands: cook, a short walk, a shower, a puzzle, a call. 3. Land: sit down with a tea, a book or a film you chose earlier.
That's it. Nothing heroic. A plan made at noon is much stronger than willpower at 7 pm.

Day 3: "No thanks" in five words or fewer
You don't owe anyone a speech. Pick one line and practise it once.
Day 3. Sooner or later someone will hold out a glass and say "Go on, just one".
Here is the good news: you don't owe anyone an explanation. Most people ask once, hear a calm answer, and move on. The trick is to have the answer ready, so you aren't making it up on the spot.
A few that work: 1. "I'm good, thanks." 2. "Not this week." 3. "I'm driving." (only if you are) 4. "I'll have a soda with lime." 5. "I'm on a month off. Feeling great."
Today's small thing: pick one line. Say it out loud once, today, even to the mirror. It sounds silly. It works.
Two more tips: get a drink in your hand early (sparkling water in a nice glass stops most offers), and plan your exit time before you arrive.
Day 4: when the urge shows up, give it ten minutes
A craving rises, peaks and fades. Here's how to ride it out.
Day 4. For many people, somewhere around now, the "I'd love a drink" thought gets loud. That's normal, and it doesn't mean anything has gone wrong.
A useful way to see an urge: it's a wave. It rises, it peaks, and it fades, usually within minutes, not hours. You don't have to fight it. You just have to not act on it until it passes.
Today's small thing: when the urge comes, set a timer for 10 minutes and do this: 1. Drink a big glass of something cold and fizzy. 2. Eat something. Hunger often dresses up as a craving. 3. Move: walk round the block, or up and down the stairs. 4. Name what you really want. Rest? Company? A reward? A full stop to the day?
When the timer goes, check in. Most of the time the wave has gone down. If it hasn't, do another ten.
If the urges feel too strong to handle alone, please talk to a doctor. You don't have to do this by yourself.

Day 5: eat a proper breakfast (and why sugar may call)
Steady meals make steadier evenings. Three easy swaps.
Day 5. You might notice you want sweets more than usual this week. Plenty of people do when they stop drinking. Don't panic and don't diet. Just keep meals regular.
Long gaps without food make the late afternoon harder. A steady day of eating makes a steadier evening.
Today's small thing: three easy swaps. 1. A real breakfast with some protein: eggs, yoghurt, or nuts with fruit. 2. A planned 4 pm snack, before the evening dip: cheese and an apple, a handful of nuts, hummus and carrots. 3. Dinner a little earlier than usual, so the evening doesn't start hungry.
If you take regular medicine or have a health condition, ask your doctor before you change how you eat.
This is how meals work on The Quiet Month too: simple food, cooked at home, at regular times. Our first month starts on 1 January 2027, up to four guests, by application. The Quiet Month, January 2027 Questions? Email info@thequietmonth.com
Day 6: plan the weekend before it plans you
Friday and Saturday nights are where most first weeks wobble. A simple plan.
Day 6. If your first weekend is coming up, this is the email to read twice.
Weekends are where most first weeks wobble. Not because people are weak, but because the weekend has no shape. Long evenings, no alarm, and old habits waiting in all the usual places.
Today's small thing: give the weekend a shape, on paper. 1. One early morning you look forward to: a walk, a swim, a slow breakfast out. 2. One evening plan with a start, a middle and an early finish. A film, a dinner, a game night. 3. One escape line: if a night out gets loud, decide now what time you'll leave.
And one kind rule: if the weekend doesn't go to plan, that's information, not failure. Start again on Monday morning. No guilt needed.

Day 7: one week done. Here's what week 2 often brings
Look back, keep one habit, and see what tends to come next.
Day 7. One week. Whatever it looked like, well done for paying attention.
First, look back. Take two minutes and write down: 1. One thing that was easier than you expected. 2. One thing that was harder. 3. One habit from this week you want to keep.
What week 2 often brings. Every person is different, so think of this as "common", not "promised". Many people say sleep starts to feel deeper, mornings come a little easier, and the 6 pm pull gets quieter. Some notice more energy, or a little more money left at the end of the week. Others find week 2 feels flat, because the newness has worn off. That's normal too. Keep the small things going.
